Of the highest rarity and in exceptional condition
Lot 277
Salonina, Augusta, 254-268. Quinarius (Silvered bronze, 16 mm, 1.75 g, 6 h), Viminacium, circa 256-257. CORN SALONINA AVG Draped bust of Salonina to right, wearing stephane. Rev. VESTA Vesta standing front, head to left, holding patera in her right hand and transverse scepter with her left. M. De Coster: Quelques quinaires Romains, en argent, inédits, in: RNB IV (1854), p. 8 and pl. II, 10 = Cohen 141 = RIC 43 (as 'Rome'). King -. MIR -, cf. 859a (Aureus). Of the highest rarity. Very well struck on a broad flan and in exceptional condition. Minor smoothing, otherwise, good extremely fine.

Göbl and King both dismissed the quinarius of Salonina with the long CORN SALONINA AVG obverse legend and VESTA-reverse as described by M. De Coster in 1854. Our example not only confirms its existence, but it is also in exceptional condition for a quinarius of this era. The coin was struck at the mint of Viminacium from dies probably engraved by the same artist who was responsible for those of MIR pl. 66, 859a, an aureus of the same type dated by Göbl to shortly before the closing of the mint and its relocation to Cologne in 257
